My World: Jim Crow Racism Will Never Die
I’m sure by now everyone has seen the video from the Oklahoma fraternity with their racist chant. It’s racism in the truest form, but that wasn’t the issue I had with it.
The issue I had was that there is no way I believe that was the first time that chant was sung. It was the first time it was seen by the viewing public though.
To put out the fire, the fraternity called on one of its former members, Barry Switzer, to make a public statement saying that that wasn’t the behavior that was going on when he was in the fraternity.
Barry Switzer is a legendary former coach of the Oklahoma Sooners football team, and he also led the Dallas Cowboys to a Super Bowl win as well. Despite what he said, I highly doubt that the chant the fraternity members were singing on that bus was an isolated incident.
I’m willing to bet that that is something that happens all the time when fraternity brothers are amongst their peers, and this was just the first time they got caught.
Then I caught the incident being discussed on MSNBC, and there was a woman on there who had the audacity to blame rappers using the “n” word so flagrantly for the actions of those people on that video.
To say that black people using a racial slur towards themselves allows whites to say what they want is laughable to say the least. Every single soul on that bus knew the magnitude of what they were singing and yet it continued, so you can’t blame anybody but those on that bus for their behavior.
It wasn’t really the “n” word usage that bothered me. The hanging the “n” word from a tree part was a bit much in my opinion. With the history of America and the idea that black people were really hung from trees, it angered me to see that being used as a joke.
Racism will always be a part of society. It doesn’t matter how far we’ve come since the days of slavery, and Jim Crow racism will never die.
I thought we at least had reached a point where, despite our difference,s we could just coexist in society without blatant acts of hate. I guess I was wrong.
