Music: The Year in Review: Plenty Worth Remembering
It's been a great year for music. Whether there was controversy (Miley Cyrus) or insane pop culture trends (twerking), something memorable was always happening.
It was the year of the comebacks. The world saw the return of Destiny's Child during the Superbowl halftime show, Fall Out Boy ended their hiatus and released "Save Rock and Roll" (whether or not they actually saved rock and roll is up to you; I beg to differ), and Justin Timberlake had the biggest comeback of the year when he released an album for the first time in seven years and topped the charts as though he had never even left.
This year, we also saw the launch and rise of several artists who have been topping the charts consecutively (Imagine Dragons, Lorde, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis).
But it all comes down to the few songs that define the year. Which artists released those songs that just can't be forgotten? The year was full of them, but here are a few.
5. "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus): At this point we've all had enough of Miley. However, there's no denying that "Wrecking Ball" is one of the biggest and best hits of the year.
4. "Stay" (Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko): Most of the world knows Rihanna as an over-sexualized performer who only sings over thumping hip hop beats, but "Stay," which I consider her best single ever, showed the world a softer, more vulnerable side of the controversial star. Never doubt Rihanna's talent, because it's there.
3. "Get Lucky" (Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams): I don't think anyone is going to forget this song. This is likely to be one of those big ones that gets played at all of the year-end parties. "Get Lucky" introduced the perfect combination of funk and house while remaining a staple on all of the radio stations.
2. "Royals" (Lorde): I don't make my support and admiration of Lorde a secret. Her debut single introduced the smartest musician of our time and a debut album that is nothing short of perfection.
1. "Holy Grail" (Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake): I'm a firm believer that no one released a song that was better than Jay-Z's "Holy Grail." However, I also believe that neither of the artists on this track are capable of releasing a bad song. Jay took his rhymes in this one and ran straight to the finish line to claim his victory.
Honorable mentions: "Wake Me Up," by Avicii; "Started From the Bottom," by Drake; "Radioactive," by Imagine Dragons; "Heart Attack," by Demi Lovato; and "Mirrors," by Justin Timberlake.
