Twenty years ago, 17-year-old Nasir Jones released his debut album “Illmatic.”  Unless you have been living under a rock, I’m certain you are familiar with Nas’s work.

“Time Is Illmatic” is a documentary about the people who helped create that classic album and the stories that went on behind the scenes during that time period.

Throughout the film, you get to hear from the producers, artists, and pivotal people involved in the creative process of constructing the album.  You get to hear from Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip, and DJ Premier, who were responsible for creating the music that went into “Illmatic.”

“Time Is Illmatic” also takes you through the journey of Nas’s childhood and the events that led up to his discovery.  It also details the death of Nas’s childhood friend “Ill Will.”

You get detailed information from Nas’s brother, Jungle, about the events that led to the creation of the album.

Overall, for a fan of hip-hop, “Time Is Illmatic” is a must watch.  It has a historical feel to it, being that “Illmatic” is one of the best hip-hop albums of all time.  There is a moment in the film when they look at a picture from the photo shoot for the album, and they speak on how most of the people are either dead or in jail.

“Time Is Illmatic” is being shown on the Showtime network.  Look through your channel guide to see when it airs.
