2014: The Year of the Edgy Look
2014 was filled with many different trends and looks that changed the way we look at fashion today. For the most part, people wanted to be comfortable but stylish at the same time. In urban fashion, athletic wear bled into high fashion. Sneakers and joggers were implemented even in the preps and conservative wardrobes. In fact, joggers out sold denim overall in 2014.
For women, “the boyfriend style” was very popular. This particular trend mimics the 90s in a lot of ways but with a modern twist. Because of all the different hairstyles, makeup, and accessories that are popular these days, many women’s “throw back looks” appear more modern and edgy and even high fashion now. Many celebs have been the inspiration for these styles, such as Zendaya, Keke Palmer, Miley Cyrus, and my personal favorite, Rihanna.
For men, the big craze is pretty much sneakers, as it has been forever, but this year there was a new flavor added to the mix. Almost every guy owns a pair of joggers, probably the biggest fashion trend for guys this whole year. It seems as though they were in every store and every guy implemented them into his style one way or another. In fact, joggers out sold jeans on an average for the year of 2014.
The biggest look for this year to me was the edgy look. It seemed as if everyone went for this edgy look—leather jackets, Timberland boots, fishnets, ripped jeans, spiked shoes, and even with accessories. Paying attention to detail was very important, because someone’s accessories could create a whole new look for what they were wearing.
Nose rings were very popular. The most interesting would have to be the septum, which is a ring right between the nostrils. This piercing will make anyone look edgy, and it is becoming more and more popular, even in 2015.
2014 was a spectacular year in fashion, and it definitely made a huge impact on how we view things. The biggest take away though is that all styles are being embarrassed. Fashion is changing and is becoming more appreciative of many different cultures and looks. So be you, be bold, and be expressive!
